Wide-Angled Empathy: The Key to Becoming a More Effective Manager
By Alex Patient
How can I build EQ – my emotional intelligence? In today’s fast-paced work environments, managers are often presented with challenges, complaints, or stories from their team members. It’s easy to naturally empathize and align with the person telling their story. However, there’s a critical leadership skill that can significantly improve your effectiveness as a manager: wide-angled empathy.
This approach is about stepping back and maintaining a broader perspective, rather than immediately aligning with one person’s viewpoint. By doing so, you’ll gain a more comprehensive understanding of what’s happening—and provide better support to those you lead.
The Power of Wide-Angled Empathy in Action
Let me share an example from my work as a leadership coach.
I once worked with a department head, we’ll call her Sarah, who was dealing with a particularly challenging dynamic between two of her team members. One of them, Emma, frequently came to Sarah with frustrations about her colleague, John, blaming him for delays and missed deadlines. Initially, Sarah sympathized with Emma’s concerns, feeling the need to intervene in the way she had been managing John.
However, through our coaching sessions, we introduced the concept of wide-angled empathy. Instead of aligning solely with Emma’s viewpoint, Sarah began to take a step back and look at the broader picture. She started gathering feedback from other team members, and what emerged was a more complex reality: John was dealing with some personal challenges and lacked the same level of support as Emma.
By applying wide-angled empathy, Sarah didn’t just sympathize with Emma but considered the wider context, including John’s struggles. She adjusted her approach, offering both team members tailored support and fostering a more balanced environment. The result? Both Emma and John thrived, and Sarah grew in her ability to manage complex team dynamics with fairness and emotional intelligence.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and Wide-Angled Empathy
Many of my clients come to me with a desire to improve their emotional intelligence, often after receiving feedback from their line managers. Emotional intelligence is a crucial component of wide-angled empathy, as it allows you to manage your own emotions, while being more attuned to the emotions and perspectives of others.
Wide-angled empathy enhances EQ in the following ways:
- Self-awareness: It helps you recognize your initial biases or emotional reactions and manage them before taking action.
- Social awareness: By considering multiple perspectives, you become more attuned to the feelings, needs, and concerns of others—not just the person in front of you.
- Relationship management: With a broader view, you’re able to mediate conflicts and offer more thoughtful support, which fosters trust and strengthens relationships within your team.
How to Practice Wide-Angled Empathy
Here are a few strategies to develop wide-angled empathy and strengthen your EQ as a manager:
- Active Listening: Truly listen to all parties involved. Instead of jumping to conclusions, ask probing questions to understand the full story. This shows that you value each person’s perspective, creating a safe environment for open communication.
- Pause Before Reacting: It’s easy to react emotionally to the first version of a story you hear. Taking a moment to reflect can allow you to gather your thoughts, consider the broader context, and avoid knee-jerk responses.
- Seek Additional Perspectives: Often, what’s not being said is just as important as what’s being shared. Try to gather different viewpoints from others within the team or department, which may reveal underlying issues or areas that need addressing.
- Engage in Peer Discussions: When faced with a difficult situation, it can be helpful to seek advice from other leaders or managers who have dealt with similar challenges. Their experiences may provide new insights or approaches you hadn’t considered.
The Benefits of Wide-Angled Empathy for Managers
By incorporating wide-angled empathy into your leadership toolkit, you’ll find several key benefits:
- Improved decision-making: You’ll be able to make more balanced and informed decisions, which consider all sides of a situation, rather than rushing into action.
- Stronger team dynamics: Your team will feel more supported and understood, which fosters trust and collaboration.
- Higher emotional intelligence: Developing this skill will naturally enhance your EQ, making you more effective at managing relationships and guiding your team through challenges.
By practicing wide-angled empathy, you’ll not only become a better listener but also a more emotionally intelligent and effective leader. It’s about pausing, stepping back, and seeing the bigger picture—so that you can provide the kind of support that truly helps your team grow and succeed.
